Cavities are a result of tooth decay forming holes in teeth. If they are left untreated they can grow bigger and cause serious structural damage to a tooth or the surrounding teeth. The cavities need to be filled with a dental filling in order to maintain the tooth’s stability. One of the best ways to keep your teeth looking natural is to use white filling composites.
- White fillings bond to the tooth, which makes it stronger than the silver filling.
- The dentist does not need to remove as much of the tooth structure when white fillings are used.
- The bonding agent used can insulate the tooth from extremes of hot and cold.
- Some white restorations can be done in one visit to the dental office.
The process for getting a cavity filled is not very difficult. The first thing that is needs to be done is the removal of the decayed areas. After the decay is removed, layers of resin are built up directly on the tooth. Then a special light is used to bond the resin to the tooth for strength. All of this can normally be done in one dental visit.
A larger cavity may need an indirect restoration. This means the filling restoration is created in a lab so it precisely fits into the tooth. After all the decayed area is removed and the filling is crafted, it is bonded to the tooth for strength. This procedure might take two or more visits to the dentist to finish.
