Porcelain crowns are used on a wide variety of dental problems, including teeth lightening, gap narrowing, fixing teeth that stick out, reduce crowding in mouth and more. Aside from fixing tooth problems, crowns can also be used to improve the outward appearance of their teeth or their smile. Porcelain crowns can be a one fix for all problems solution.
When a crown is going to be put in, a thin layer is shaved off of the tooth that the crown is going over. During the first visit to your dentist, a mold is taken of the teeth in order to get a perfect shape for the next session. Once the crown is made it is bonded onto the teeth using a bonding material. After the bonding has taken place, which normally takes one session at the dentist, the patient can get back to eating normally.
Crowns are extremely popular because of their excellent history of fixing dental problems and their track record is proven to work in all countries of the world. In the past, crowns were bonded to the teeth with a metal based framework so the crown could withstand the pressures of daily use. But today, most of the time the metal framework is not required for crown placement. Modern technology has advanced so much that pure porcelain is strong enough for use on hard working molar teeth. The old metal framework had its issues. After a few years, the gum line of the wearer would recede with age, leaving an ugly grey line at the top of the crowed tooth. Also, due to the color of the metal showing through, it was difficult to make crowned teeth look natural for more than a few years.
Advantages of using pure porcelain for crowns are that they are nearly identical in color to the surrounding teeth, making it almost impossible for others to see that there is a crown in your mouth. Your dentist can match the color of the crown to the color of the teeth already in the mouth. They will be able to place an order with a lab to create the tooth with the perfect color and shape. This will make the patient happier with their new smile.
