Fractured or dislocated jaws occur when there is a great deal of force applied to the head and neck region. These injuries are common in combat sports like mixed martial arts and contact sports including rugby. They may also occur after traumatic events like motor vehicle accidents. When a fractured or dislocated jaw occurs it can cause double vision or temporary blindness, nerve damage to areas around the jaw and disproportion of the face.
A fractured jaw is an injury that should not be taken lightly. It is a very serious injury and can actually be a potentially life-threatening dental emergency. If you feel that you have a seriously fractured jaw, it is a good idea to call the EMS. Because the jaw is located near areas of the head and neck that are very susceptible to other traumatic injuries, a fracture can be dangerous. The force it takes to fracture a jaw is substantial, so you have to be careful to check for other head injuries.
While you are waiting to get to a doctor or for the emergency services to get to you, you should follow the same rules you would follow if it was any other head injury. You do not want to move your head too much and hold the jaw as steady as possible. Keep the teeth together and avoid lying flat. And always try to remember to remain calm.
