A dental abscess is an infection that is found in the mouth, face, jaw or throat area. They form because there was a tooth infection or a cavity. The bacteria that results from the cavity can extend into the gums, cheek, throat beneath the tongue or into the jaw bones. When the bacteria infect the tissue in the mouth causing inflammation, it can be very painful. The site of the infection can collect pus and it can become progressively more painful. The area will stay painful until the abscess either ruptures and drains on its own or it is drained surgically. Some infections can get to the point where the swelling can threaten to block the airway making it difficult to breath. Infections are common in people who have poor dental health, normally resulting from a lack of proper and timely dental visits.
Dental abscesses are caused by a direct bacteria growth that was produced by an existing cavity. They are normally found in the soft tissues and bones of the face and neck. When an infected tooth does not receive the appropriate dental care, it can cause the abscess to form and grow. Poor dental hygiene, including both brushing and flossing the teeth daily, can lead to cavities forming in the teeth. Then the infection can spread to the gums and adjacent area, causing pain.
Symptoms of a dental abscess can include pain, swelling and redness in the mouth and face. If the infection becomes advanced, one can experience nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and diarrhea. Other signs of an abscess include, but are not limited to, cavities, gum inflammation, oral swelling, tenderness with touch, pus drainage and difficulty with fully opening the mouth or swallowing.
